Jody Lynn Nye Hi, Janice! Hi, everyone.
^2wicky: Hello!
K`tin: hello
JaniceMars: Jody, thanks for being here early....as you can
see we have a welcoming committee.
Jody Lynn Nye I'm delighted!
HOST EBK Astra: Hi 2Wicky and Angelias 'waving thru the wall'
ARandolphwolski: hello...
Krstlsingr: We are reading her Ship Errant in Anne M group this
week!
Jody Lynn Nye Thank you, everyone!
I'm happy to be here.
JaniceMars: Very good to see you this evening.
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, what Anne M
group?
HOST EBK Astra: Hi Jody!!!
Jody Lynn Nye Hi, Astra!
JaniceMars: We have a question here from 2wicky: Q: What in
the world was kali's role in the Hindu pantheon?
JaniceMars: Interesting question...
JaniceMars: But I don't think that's the kind of mythology you
write about, is it Jody?
Krstlsingr: The one on AOL...
Polgaratex: Super to get to meet Ms Nye
Krstlsingr: meets sundays
HOST EBK Astra: Anne McCaffrey group, I think, Jody
Jody Lynn Nye Kali is the destroyer.
I can look it up, if you insist, but what's that got to do with me?
^2wicky: I'd never heard of you before tonight, Jody :P How
about a little background information?
JaniceMars: Well, Jody, maybe the book you have out now... Advanced
Mythology?
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, no. I write
about a group of Little People who are discovered living in the basement
of a college library by a very nice young man who believes in magic.
Polgaratex: I am also a member of the McCaffrey group and we
are currently
Polgaratex: reading Ms Nye's Ship Errant
Jody Lynn Nye 2wicky, I'm a science
fiction and fantasy writer. I'm known for working with Anne McCaffrey,
Piers Anthony...
Jody Lynn Nye and Robert Asprin.
I do a lot of humor. If you want to...
Jody Lynn Nye check out my website,
it's www.sff.net/people/jodynye
^2wicky: Nice meeting you, Ms. I'll be sure to check it out
JaniceMars: And it's a very funny series of books too, Jody.
There are 4 books total now aren't there?
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, that's right.
I'm about to get a contract for the fifth, but it won't be out for a few
years.
Angelias: well i have one of your books nice Ms. .... i just
came by toi say i liked it
Krstlsingr: So how did you meet and start writing with Anne?
Jody Lynn Nye Angelias, thank you.
I appreciate kind words.
George_Lambton: I am a big fan of Mythology 101
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, my husband
was part owner of a game company...
Jody Lynn Nye named Mayfair Games,
who did the Dragonriders of Pern...
Jody Lynn Nye board game. He gave
a proposal to TOR Books for a series of ...
Jody Lynn Nye choose-your-own-adventures
that take place in...
Jody Lynn Nye established SF/fantasy
worlds. Pern was one of those, and...
Jody Lynn Nye I was lucky enough
to be the one to write those books. She's...
Jody Lynn Nye been absolutely wonderful
to me ever since.
daetrin: I'm curious to know what you think about the Baen Free
Library, and if you plan to add any books of yours to it in the future.
Jody Lynn Nye Jim has permission
to put up my books. I think it's good...
Jody Lynn Nye publicity, a chance
for people to read a little of my work.
Krstlsingr: but you liked the brainship inspace worlds better?
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, I loved working
in the brainship world. Anne and I...
Jody Lynn Nye enjoyed working together,
and I had fun doing my own.
K`tin: Question for Jodi, Do you meet with Elizabeth Moon and
Anne McCaffrey on a regular basis?
Jody Lynn Nye K
Jay: Wow, a real author!
Jody Lynn Nye K'tin, I meet with
them about as often as anyone from...
Polgaratex: How do you manage the mechanics of collaborations?
Take turns at chapters?
Jody Lynn Nye Illinois gets to
see someone who lives in Texas or Ireland. (g)
Jody Lynn Nye Pol, it's been different
every time I collaborate....
Jody Lynn Nye but generally we
work out the outline together, then I ...
Jody Lynn Nye have taken either
the whole outline or my part of it...
Jody Lynn Nye home and written
my draft, which gets combined with...
Jody Lynn Nye my collaborator's
work. Then the whole piece gets a...
Jody Lynn Nye final going over
by one or both of us.
JaniceMars: Thanks Jody.
Jody Lynn Nye Hey, Barry. Nice
to see you.
K`tin: Thanks
baryon: Good to see you too
K`tin: Question 2. What is your opinion of David Webber, and
will you ever do a cooperative work with him?
Jody Lynn Nye K'tin, David (Weber,
by the way) has a full plate. You...
Jody Lynn Nye would not believe
how many books Jim Baen has him...
Jody Lynn Nye under contract for.
He's working with a couple of people...
Jody Lynn Nye already. I wouldn't
rule out working with him, but neither....
Jody Lynn Nye of us has much time
right now.
Leonall: I'm the co-host of The McCaffrey Group & am thrilled
to be here with Ms. Nye. We're reading The Ship Errant now in the group
Leonall: Thanks for your wonderful books, Ms. Nye.
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, thank you
very much.
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, a couple
of people are here from your group.
Jody Lynn Nye I'm happy to hear
you're reading The Ship Errant. Are you enjoying it?
Leonall: I know - we all love you
Polgaratex: Do you prefer collaborations or working alone?
Jody Lynn Nye Pol, I like doing
my own work a little better, because...
Jody Lynn Nye I don't have to do
outlines, or negotiate over difficult...
Krstlsingr: its intersring reading, like the 'Joat shell-person'
books, brainship novels, Death of sleep, with you have
Jody Lynn Nye matters with another
writer. We're sensitive, you know (g).
Leonall: What it was like working with Anne McCaffrey.
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, she was
wonderful to me: accepting, generous...
Jody Lynn Nye motherly, encouraging
and firm when I needed it. She...
Krstlsingr: elements that Annes's books usually dont touch on...
Polgaratex: I actually enjoyed it more than The Ship Who Won
Krstlsingr: when she writes solo
Polgaratex: LOL!
Jody Lynn Nye once told me I could
tell people I was her daughter so ...
Jody Lynn Nye they wouldn't be
jealous I was working with her. (g)
daetrin: How did you originally learn to write? Was it self
taught? Or did you take a lot of classes dealing with the subject?
Jody Lynn Nye daetrin, I guess
I'm self taught. I took a college course in fiction writing, but I didn't
get anything out of it. Only three of us got A's. We'd already been writing
on our own for years.
Jody Lynn Nye I've been telling
stories to my brothers, cousins and friends for years...
Jody Lynn Nye and made little story
books out of my dad's office paper.
JaniceMars: So Jody, would you then not recommend creative writing
classes?
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, I don't think
writing classes can teach anyone how...
Jody Lynn Nye to be creative, but
they can teach you about structure. I'm...
Jody Lynn Nye not saying I know
everything there is to know, nor will...
Jody Lynn Nye I ever, but they
weren't really for me. They might do...
Jody Lynn Nye a lot of good for
some beginning writers.
Jody Lynn Nye Hi, TAM.
JaniceMars: Thanks Jody..
George_Lambton: Actually I would like to know what are her favourite
authors and which writers has the most impact on her own writing.
Jody Lynn Nye George, my favourite
writers (where in the Commonwealth...
Jody Lynn Nye are you from?) include
Terry Pratchett, Anne McCaffrey...
Jody Lynn Nye Rex Stout, Mark Twain,
Charles Dickens, Lois McMaster Bujold...
Jody Lynn Nye (lessee, who's on
my shelves...) Dave Barry, and many...
Jody Lynn Nye others.
George_Lambton: Neat.
George_Lambton: Long list.
Jody Lynn Nye George, not at all.
This is only the list I can give you without looking. (g)
George_Lambton: LOL
AAllegra: Do you belong to any Storytelling groups, like the
old style of storycrafting... where the imagination of the storycrafter
is put to the test and everyone waits with baited breath to hear the next
story
Jody Lynn Nye AAllegra, I've always
been interested in joining a Storytelling...
George_Lambton: Same here why should you be any different.
Jody Lynn Nye group, but when?
In all my "copious spare time"?
HOST EBK Astra: Well sure. We all know writers sit around and
stare at the walls ::: fleeee :::
Leonall: What is your favorite book that you wrote?
Jody Lynn Nye We're just looking
for that inspiration which sneaked out of the computer.
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, one's first
baby is often one's favorite. I still...
Jody Lynn Nye have great fondness
for Mythology 101. But I love....
Jody Lynn Nye all my children.
HOST EBK Astra: G:
Jody Lynn Nye They never call,
but sometimes they send money.
JaniceMars: LOLOLOLOL!
Jay: Do you have any suggestions for young authors looking to
start a career in writing, then? Places to start, writing contests, college,
etc...
Krstlsingr: LOL thats sort of what they do to me RPing groups,
cos can draw out a quick story-puzzle-adventure and play it...
Krstlsingr: and evry time ask them to make one for me, that
wont know, they say, but we suck at it, and you so good...
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, that sounds
like fun. I haven't had time for RP games in years.
Jody Lynn Nye Jay, there are so
many opportunities out there. Send...
Krstlsingr: maybe thats like a modern sotrycrafting?
Jody Lynn Nye your best work only,
keep writing while you have things...
Jody Lynn Nye under submission,
always act professionally toward...
Jody Lynn Nye editors and other
writers. Read the Writers Market books....
Jody Lynn Nye for ideas where to
send your work. Is it SF/fantasy?
ARandolphwolski: I just wanted to know what are some of the
books she has co authored with Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Moon..?
Jody Lynn Nye Randolph, I have
never written a book with Elizabeth Moon...
Jody Lynn Nye The books I've written
with Anne McCaffrey include The Ship Who Won, The Death of Sleep, Crisis
on Doona, Treaty at Doona...
Krstlsingr: just wish more did it, always tell them, want to
do some RP where dont know what the plot is, so can have some adventure
too!
Jody Lynn Nye the two choose-your-own-adventure
books I wrote in the world of Pern: Dragonharper and Dragonrider, and of
course, The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern.
K`tin: Do you do any local functions in Illinois?
ARandolphwolski: thanks..
Sib: Hi
Jody Lynn Nye Hi, there!
Jay: Whoa, you worked on the Dragonlover's Guide to Pern?
Jody Lynn Nye K'tin, I attend both
DucKon and WindyCon every year.
Jody Lynn Nye Jay, do you have
a copy? Peek down at the bottom of the cover.
Jay: Heh, I love that book.
JaniceMars: And we had a great time at Windycon.
Jay: Neat!
Jody Lynn Nye Sorry, that sounded
snide. I didn't mean it to.
OldWolfGaidin: Do you know how one of your own stories is going
to end when you start it?
Jody Lynn Nye Old Wolf, you ought
to know at least that by the time...
Jody Lynn Nye you start writing
a story. You have to frame the plot so...
Jody Lynn Nye the energy rolls
along and terminates when the story does...
Jody Lynn Nye or the reader is
left saying "huh?"
OldWolfGaidin: thank you
baryon: Have you been watching TAKEN on the SciFi channel? If
so, your opinion on UFOs and abductees.
Sib: How?
Jody Lynn Nye Barry, I haven't
seen Taken.
Jody Lynn Nye Sib, how what?
ROGER7363: Ask Jody Nye if I'm right in believing that she's
had some work done for her by a web designer named Ruta? I believe the
lady (Ruta) does web page work for Nye and Moon.
Jody Lynn Nye Roger, Ruta Duhon
does excellent web design. Take...
Jody Lynn Nye a look at my website,
or Elizabeth's. It loads cleanly....
Jody Lynn Nye and quickly for something
with as many graphics on...
Jody Lynn Nye it as mine has.
Krstlsingr: intersting... but some books evolve into trioogys
and beyond, like maybe dune, others planned...
Jay: Yes, how do you treat writing a novel differently than
writing, say, an essay or a short story? How much do you plan out, and
how much do you just let "flow"...?
Krstlsingr: like Annes fisrt book, somthign to make dragons
heroes, not bad, and then,,, many books..
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, I construct
my worlds so there is more room to expand. A world that has little background
might run out of interest in just one book.
ROGER7363: thx, I thought I remembered that from posts where
ROGER7363: she has been very helpful to others in the passt
on
ROGER7363: internet bulletin boards
Jody Lynn Nye Roger, Ruta is very
helpful and knowledgeable. She...
Jody Lynn Nye and Elizabeth did
that little animation on my site.
JaniceMars: Okay I'm sorry...I've been deluging you Jody...ready
for the next question?
Jody Lynn Nye Yes.
SciFiDog: Do you have any multimedia plans? Or do you think
that sort of thing... books with CD's included, etc. Will become prevalent
soon?
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, that's hard
to say. I have no games based...
Jody Lynn Nye on my work yet, which
is one of the things they include...
Jody Lynn Nye on CDs. But I would
like to have my work put into ...
Jody Lynn Nye books on tape, and
of course I'd love to sell the....
Jody Lynn Nye movie rights (wouldn't
we all?).
Jay: Not to be rude, but I didn't catch a response to my question
up there...
Sib1: Amen, sister...and may it come to pass.
Jody Lynn Nye Jay, please repeat
the question.
Jody Lynn Nye Sib, you and me both.
Yea, verily.
Sib1: Especially a certain sf doctor with dog
Sib1: Love your story in Pharoah Fantastic, btw
sfaf: Is there any author you've not yet written with that you'd
like to? Why?
SciFiDog: how about 'music from this universe..' , past stories...
stuff like that.
Jody Lynn Nye Thanks. Loved yours,
too.
Jody Lynn Nye sfaf...WELL, I have
a very good friend who's in this...
Jody Lynn Nye chatroom right now
that I hope one day we will get to...
Jody Lynn Nye collaborate, but
she's doing so well with her Vampire series and Vampire romances, and me
with all my insane projects. Susan Sizemore, take a bow.
Sib1: Bow. I
TAMirabile: Thanks
JaniceMars: Good to see you Susan!
SciFiDog: :::cla clap clap:::
HOST EBK Astra: I met Susan in Philly!
Jay: How do you treat writing a novel differently than writing,
say, an essay or a short story? How much do you plan out, and how much
do you just let "flow"...?
Jody Lynn Nye Jay, when I'm working
on a book I put down every single...
Jody Lynn Nye thing I can possibly
think of about the world and the characters...
Jody Lynn Nye then I start organizing.
Often with a short story I can just
Jody Lynn Nye start writing and
get it done start to finish. With an essay there is more writing and rewriting,
because you want your topic to be as clearly presented as possible. There
is a best way to construct paragraphs in nonfiction.
Jody Lynn Nye Novel writing is
a much bigger effort. Things do change...
Jody Lynn Nye by themselves. I
had a couple of minor characters fall...
Jody Lynn Nye in love and insist
on getting married in one of my books. I...
Jody Lynn Nye hadn't really given
them a lot of thought in that way ...
Jody Lynn Nye when I started wriitng
the book.
Araiused: Q: Do you write from an outline or do you just write
the first chapter?
Jody Lynn Nye Arai, you could call
my conglomeration of facts an outline. And then again, you may not. (g)
I usually start writing the first chapter.
Lecia : How do you, as a writer, conquer writers block?
Jody Lynn Nye Lecia, I go and do
something physical. Anne McCaffrey...
Jody Lynn Nye always told me that
when she was blocked, she went and cleaned out her oven. I have a self-cleaning
oven, but there're plenty other menial tasks I can give my body to do while
my brain is clearing the clog.
Araiused: Cool :
JaniceMars: LOLOL! Thanks
Astra: if a person has never read any of your books, which do
you recommend starting with?
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, do you like
SF or fantasy more?
Astra: I alternate.
Jody Lynn Nye Okay. For SF, try
Taylor's Ark. For fantasy, try Mythology 101.
Leonall: Even though you haven't seen "Taken," do you believe
there are other intelligent species out there?
HOST EBK Astra: I'd say 25% fantasy, 75% SF
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, the odds
are in favor of there being more...
Jody Lynn Nye intelligent species
out there. I am sure that there is someone...
Jody Lynn Nye but who knows how
long it will take us to find one another?
Jody Lynn Nye And I don't necessarily
subscribe to the Star Trek ideal...
TAMirabile: Two of my favorites :
HOST EBK Astra: Taylor's Ark appeals to me just with the title.
Jody Lynn Nye that they will all
be upright bilaterally symmetrical beings.
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, it's about
a spacegoing doctor, her merchant...
Jody Lynn Nye husband, her dog,
cat, bunnies, mice and friendly alien.
K`tin: which do you like better Star wars or star trek?
SciFiDog: did anyone ask jody what she's got coming out and
what shes working on now?
Jody Lynn Nye I loved the first
two Star Wars movies, but I love more of what Star Trek has done. I like
the ideals it was based upon. So much SF before it came along was so negative
about the future.
TAMirabile: Astra, its one of the plots I was trying to remember
where I read not long ago good book
Krstlsingr: ::yay like Therile six legged and flying... who
need cars and stuff. like 'why waste space on roads' in Restoree
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, I'm so glad
you asked! Bob Asprin (Another Fine Myth) and I have just finished a few
short stories set in the Myth Adventures universe,
JaniceMars: You're doing a lot of work with Meisha Merlin Publishing
these days, aren't you Jody?
Jody Lynn Nye preparatory to working
on the first of two contracted Myth Adventures collaborations. The first,
due out this coming September, will be called Myth Alliances.
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, yes. Stephe
Pagel have been velly velly good to me.
JaniceMars: Totally cool, thanks Jody....
OldWolfGaidin: How much research do you do for your science
fiction?
Jody Lynn Nye Wolf, all I can.
One should not make fundamental mistakes...
Jody Lynn Nye on the provable parts
of science, lest one lose one's ...
Jody Lynn Nye audience when you're
really trying to suspend their...
Jody Lynn Nye disbelief.
Araiused: Q: What is more important in the story from your viewpoint?
Plot or characterization?
BG1818: Hello!
Jody Lynn Nye Arai, that's like
asking if I like the walls or roof of my house more. But SF readers used
to give a pass to poor characterization if the plot was gripping enough.
I believe you need believable characters and a plausible plot.
baryon: Is it easier working with a smaller publisher? Congrats
on the Myth Collaborations.
OldWolfGaidin: Thank you. That confirms my opinion.
Jody Lynn Nye Barry, it's different.
Jody Lynn Nye And thank you, BTW.
SciFiDog: Yeth. ditto.
K`tin: Have you read the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy? If
so your thoughts?
Sib1: LOL!
Sib1: has she read...snicker...snort...
Jody Lynn Nye K'tin, I love the
Hitchhiker's Guide. It is one of the funniest series ever written.
Cat2vin: I loved the Myth series, I am looking forward to reading
the short stories
Krstlsingr: yeah NIN, belivable, even if not likeable..
Jody Lynn Nye I do know where my
towel is (I'm sitting on it), and I fear Vogon poetry. (g)
JaniceMars: Excellent....okay folks...
JaniceMars: We've had Jody duct taped to the hot seat hear for
nearly an hour...
Jody Lynn Nye and no comments about
hamsters, please.
JaniceMars: I think it's time to turn it over to open chat...
if Jody wouldn't mind staying with us for a bit...
Lecia: Is that all? Only an hour *giggles*
Krstlsingr: ::covers ears::
JaniceMars: Are you game Jody?
Jody Lynn Nye Yes, of course I'll
stay.
SciFiDog: yipee!
Jody Lynn Nye Gentlebeings, start
your browsers...
JaniceMars: LOLOLOLOL
baryon: Jody, Baen has finally started using Baryon quotes,
but still won't send review copies. Hope they change their mind soon.
SBRinNJ: You mean we can now type in here? LOL Formal protocal
is effective, but frustrating! lol
HOST EBK Astra: The fastest author in a chat room. We need to
give this lady some kind of award :
BG1818: Hello Jody this is Beth Gwinn. How are you?
Jody Lynn Nye Beth, hi! How's it
going?
Sib1: the flying fingers of fate award?
baryon: You are doing a great job on everything you write. Hope
you keep it up.
Jody Lynn Nye Thank you, Barry.
SciFiDog: Astra... make her pick from the list, like everyone
else. That, or a squid. :-D
SBRinNJ: Round of applause for Jody!
OldWolfGaidin: I agree, SBR. I find I have to restrain myself
while protocol is in effect.
HOST EBK Astra: SB, you can type anytime. If it gets to hectic,
then I get the whip out, LOL
SBRinNJ: LOL Astra!
Jody Lynn Nye Sib, the Flying Fickle
Finger of Fate Award.
Krstlsingr: JOAT= Just Outtypes All Them?
OldWolfGaidin: ::applauds Jody Lynn Nye::
Jody Lynn Nye SBR, thanks.
HOST EBK Astra: An Ollie! Good idea, Sci :
K`tin: Thanks for answering my questions and writing such wonderful
novels.
Polgaratex: LOL a Wolf restrained is one frustrated Wolf!
SciFiDog: ::::clap clap clap clap::::: :::huzzah!::::
Jody Lynn Nye Thank you, K'tin.
Thanks for coming.
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, LOL!
Polgaratex: yehhhhhh Jody Lynn!
SBRinNJ: Thank you Jody!
BG1818: Ok... Just thought I'd check in and see what was happening.
Good to see ya in here. How's Bill?
TAMirabile: LOL Krst
Polgaratex: must make being a writer easier
Jody Lynn Nye Bill's fine. He keeps
stopping in to watch me type. (g)
JaniceMars: lolololol
Jody Lynn Nye Pol, one of the nicest
things a teacher ever did for me was tell me my handwriting was illegible,
and that I should learn to type. - -
Jody Lynn Nye He's now a newscaster
in Minneapolis.
Leonall: this was wonderful
TAMirabile: Jody, I had realized that MYTHOLOGY 101 was your
first book---fun
Leonall: thanks
Krstlsingr: And thanks for writing. Love reading ur storys!
Leonall: me too
TAMirabile: geesh hadn't
Sib1: You have lovely handwriting! she said indignantly.
Jody Lynn Nye Thank you, Leonall.
Jody Lynn Nye TAM, my first book
was really Dragonharper (1987).
Jody Lynn Nye Mythology 101 was
1990.
Lecia: Jody, I really liked your answer about which was more
important; charterization or plot. You have a positive outlook on writing.
I believe that with solid chaacters breathed into life the plot will be
dictated by the characters attitudes.
Jody Lynn Nye Sib, I have lovely
calligraphy. I have...er...idiosyncratic handwriting.
baryon: Been a while, hope you are doing well. Hope you are
having a good holiday season
Jody Lynn Nye Lecia, I agree wiht
you.
HOST EBK Astra: LOL
BG1818: Tell him I said HI! I was only here for the end of your
chat but it looked like it went real well.
Sib1: Well I can read it . I can't read my own handwriting.
Polgaratex: LOL!! Good for her!
Polgaratex: G: opps him
Jody Lynn Nye Barry, the holiday
season is shaping up to be insane.
Jody Lynn Nye Beth, I will tell
him (drat, he's out of reach now.)
Jody Lynn Nye Sib, I can generally
read yours. Well, that's typical, isn't it? (g)
Jody Lynn Nye How's the puppy?
Leonall: really - wow
TAMirabile: Thanks I'll look for it
SciFiDog: Ah, Minneapolis. I got stuck in a blizzard there ...
Haloween of 92.
Sib1: Nefer is sleeping in the middle of the bed...and looking
forward to her aunt jody treats...
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, I understand
that the Mpls natives pride themselves on handling snow.
Jody Lynn Nye Give puppy a good
scritching when she wakes up. Baking is under way.
Leonall: I may have missed it, but what are you working on now
-
or is it a secret?
SciFiDog: S'ok. Sanity is overrated. At least thats what I've
heard. :-
STARMOM79: You know, I rushed and still have to go back out
because I forgot butter for the rest of the cookies, too bad I missed her
Sib1: What snow?
HOST EBK Astra: She's still here, STAR
STARMOM79: No, I didn't! there she is! Hello Ms Nye
JaniceMars: Jody...you bake puppy biscuits?
Sib1: She bakes wonderful puppy biscuits. And wedding cakes.
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, I'm working
with Bob Asprin on a new Myth Adventures book. It's called Myth Alliances,
and will be out in time for WorldCon (September).
Jody Lynn Nye Starmom, I'm still
here.
Jody Lynn Nye Hi, Starmom.
SciFiDog: LOL Jody. Thats why the rented the convertible to
the clueless gal from LA, I'm sure. ;-
JaniceMars: Jody, now am I wrong in thinking that you've already
completed one collaborative work with Asprin?
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, yes. I have
a wonderful recipe from a great book called The Complete Book of Breads
by Bernard Clayton, the patron saint of baking.
Lecia: Goodevening.. Time to get some writing done. I am newly
motivated :)
HOST EBK Astra: Torcon!!
OldWolfGaidin: I thought the Myth Adventures books were pretty
cool.
STARMOM79: Glad, I was hoping you would still be here. I rushed
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, yes. We did
License Invoked, a book about spies, magic and rock'n'roll for Baen.
SciFiDog: OK. You write and cook? Do you ever burn anything
while engrossed in writing duties?
Jody Lynn Nye Go, Lecia, go!
Lecia: hehe
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, no. By this
stage of the game, I'm really good at potboilers. Ar ar ar.
Jody Lynn Nye Sorry. Couldn't resist.
JaniceMars: LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Sib1: aaaaaahhhhh...
Jody Lynn Nye I love to bake. This
is a fun season of the year for me.
Jody Lynn Nye I run a cookie exchange
with the local friends and neighbors. Been doing it for six years now.
Jody Lynn Nye I've got seven dozen
snickerdoodles cooling upstairs.
JaniceMars: I have to admit that I do too...but I have to pry
myself away from the computer first. Do you alot a certain amount of time
per day to your writing, and then no more?
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, I can't judge
how much time I'm going to be in front of the computer. Sometimes I can't
concentrate, and sometimes I'm so motivated I'm up half the night. Most
days work out in between.
Krstlsingr: so how did you start writitng for like publishing?
me - write for fun, and for my friens, and RP stories online, so far...
STARMOM79: One year I wasn't feeling well and I didn't send
out any cookies and my sister got ticked off
Polgaratex: Jody how did you like working with Piers Anthony?
OldWolfGaidin: 'Myth Adventures' was my first encounter with
the 'didactic novel'.
Jody Lynn Nye Pol, we had a good
time. He's got a great sense of humor.
JaniceMars: That was an interesting question that scrolled past
here...
Jody Lynn Nye Hmmm?
JaniceMars: What got you started actually submitting stories?
HOST EBK Astra: Jody - do you work outside the house? Or is
writing your one and only?
Jody Lynn Nye To what, to magazines?
The awful truth is that I've never published a story in a magazine.
JaniceMars: Really! Your first sale was a novel?
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, my job is
writing. It's nice that it's portable, and I know how lucky I am to be
able to do it full time.
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, my first
sale was a game module, to Mayfair Games. I did work for their Nick Velvet
role-play game.
JaniceMars: Oh excellent...so the gentleperson who asked the
question...who is writing rpgs for friends may be on the right track then.
T83BIRD: Apologies to Jody Lynn -- Bonnie and I have been making
holiday cookies. Tonight -- cinnamon jumbles.
Krstlsingr: Did you do 'fanzine' or hobby stuff for friends
first, or right to publish novel then?
Jody Lynn Nye It depends. Not everyone
who writes game material can make the jump. Because most game material
is licensed, meaning it's not your original universe, writers often take
shortcuts which are unforgivable in original fiction.
Jody Lynn Nye A friend of ours
was the fiction author for Dragon magazine for a while. She always said
that if she could hear the dice rolling, she rejected the story.
JaniceMars: LOL
Krstlsingr: was me
SciFiDog: having a partner must help alot. I bet its tough being
single and a full time writer. Even if you make good bucks, hard to get
a mortgage,etc.
OldWolfGaidin: heh I remember Mayfair Games.
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, I have a very
short list of fanfic I wrote, but I was already a pro when I wandered into
fandom (and what a strange weekend that was!).
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, I am lucky,
although my husband is also a freelancer. He writes, edits, designs computer
and board games, and packages books.
JaniceMars: What was your first initiation to the world of SF
Fans?
OldWolfGaidin: Interesting insight.
Sib1: Oh, sir...
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, WorldCon
1980, Boston. Six thousand people, all strangers to me but one. I was petrified.
The friend who brought me there, Barbara, probably still has the marks
on her arm where I clutched with panicky fingers. Who were all of these
people and what were they DOING?
JaniceMars: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
HOST EBK Astra: Which was your first con, Jody?
HOST EBK Astra: A World?
SciFiDog: I read some really bad Speilberg sponsored SF Novelthat
was an obvious game tie in. You could not get into the story... it was
all 'LEVELS' in the game.
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, stay tuned
and read answer above.
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, that happens.
It's sad, when there is so much good original fiction that can't find a
slot.
JaniceMars: Funny...I believe someone, whose initials are JD,
had a very similar reaction to WorldCon not that long ago.
HOST EBK Astra: LOL Jody
OldWolfGaidin: lol
SciFiDog: agreed!
HOST EBK Astra: LOLOL Mars
STARMOM79: Dose everything in the world have a website?
JDipale: World Con RULES!!!
TAMirabile: Mars it seems I remember that and wasn't there something
about elevators?
Leonall: I own both your Crossroads Pern adventure books - very
unusual format - are you considering doing any others - & is there
any possibility for their reissuing?
JaniceMars: LOLOLOLOLOL, "something about elevators" yes there
was TAM.
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, they are
out of print, probably for good. They, like other Choose-your-own-adventures,
had their heyday just before Nintendo came out. Then, they sank like rocks.
Jody Lynn Nye Hang on to your copies.
They're rare relics.
JaniceMars: Jody, would it be possible to get them second hand?
I know that I get a lot of out of print things via eBay and 2nd hand stores.
SciFiDog: Jody, BTW, I've been reading your work for some time..
since the 'Trillium' collaberations.
Krstlsingr: when ur reading by flashlight, there are no websites...
:
HOST EBK Astra: LOL Krst
SciFiDog: I'm glad you're still at it.
HOST EBK Astra: ::: innocent eyes ::::
JDipale: 'In Cyberspace, no one can hear you Right-Click' :
OldWolfGaidin: Um, about the 'Trillium' books. Opinions: good,
bad?
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, thank you, but
I didn't write the Trillium collabs.
Jody Lynn Nye Wolf, I haven't read
them, either.
Leonall: well, for Pern fans, they are golden collectibles
OldWolfGaidin: lol JD
HOST EBK Astra: There's always eBay
TAMirabile: I tried making a tree of one of the Choose-your-own-adventures
once interesting
Krstlsingr: like they say my original copy of people of pern
is...
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, golden is
right. A copy of Dragonrider sold for a charity event for $140.
Jody Lynn Nye TAM, I had to make
trees to write the books. They are in my secret files.
SciFiDog: um. well. dammit. I still read your stuff... I'm just
very bad with memory of who wrote what. ask astra. :-D
HOST EBK Astra: ::: snort :::
Polgaratex: the Trilliums were ok
ROGER7363: Thanks Ms. Nye for appearing here, it has been
ROGER7363: interesting watching all the discussion, I've enjoy
ROGER7363: following the conversation, all of you have a good
ROGER7363: weekend, night.
OldWolfGaidin: I was rereading some old copies of 'Analog' and
I came across an ad for them.
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, that's cool.
Jody Lynn Nye Good night, Roger.
JaniceMars: OOoooh....secret files. Speaking of which...I know
that you mentioned you're collaborating with Asprin...how many books so
far and when will they be out?
OldWolfGaidin: Night, Roger
HOST EBK Astra: Night ROGER
OldWolfGaidin: I also found an advertisement for the 'very last
book in the Pern series', 'Weyrs of Pern'.
TAMirabile: I wish they hadn't sunk out of sight good stuff
Jody Lynn Nye The contract so far
calls for two, but we are likely to do more if they do well.
Jody Lynn Nye Wolf, All the Weyrs
of Pern was the last chronological book in the series. The newer ones are
filling in the history of the colony.
Krstlsingr: isnt it 'all the weyrs of pern?'
HOST EBK Astra: Those would be the kind of stories/books to
put on a CD to include with your next book :
SciFiDog: TAM... check Powells bookstore site. they're in Portland
They have a gazillion used books.
OldWolfGaidin: I was wondering what caused the publishers to
barf up, I mean, reprint the Myth Adventures books. ;-
Jody Lynn Nye I see, Astra. Well,
that's a marketing decision the publisher has to make.
Krstlsingr: yes - the tree format, in html, with claickable
links to the next section!
HOST EBK Astra: Thanks for that picture, Wolf. LOL
SciFiDog: Amazon buys 'out of print' titles from powells.
OldWolfGaidin: Ah, I see, Jody. Thank you for clearing that
up.
Krstlsingr: html was made for those!
OldWolfGaidin: lol Astra
Polgaratex: yeah Amazon.com has many used book dealers in its
stable
Jody Lynn Nye Wolf, maybe you still
have your copies, but there are many new readers who have never read them
and can't get the whole set for themselves. It's especially cogent now
that numbers 11 and 12 have been published.
Jody Lynn Nye Barf up, indeed.
STARMOM79: Krstlsingr, is your sighn on a reference to McCaffrey's
Crystal Singer books? When we had a chat about what SF jobs we wanted,
I chose crystal singer. I wish she would write a sequel. There are still
unfinished items
Polgaratex: Jody can you tell us something about the cover art
and how it is selected and contracted?
Jody Lynn Nye Do you have any idea
how hard it is to get OP books back into print?
Sib1: Ah the "wisdom" of publishers letting books in series
go out of print. Jane says to tell you your story is awesome.
SciFiDog: Now, there are so many books in the Perniverse...
its starting to look like a mortgage payment. :-D I wish the TV series
worked out. I'm still furious when I think about that fiasco.
Leonall: Actually 'Skies of Pern' is the last in the series
Krstlsingr: reissue the adventunre novels that way, lots of
us would by the CDroms!
OldWolfGaidin: Hm...I hadn't thought of that, Jody.
TAMirabile: Jody, you said you never had anything in a magazine,
but I saw several stories in your bibliography----
JaniceMars: That is interested...do you have any say now over
who does your cover art Jody?
Jody Lynn Nye Pol, cover art is
the choice of the publisher, and often influenced by the marketing department.
It depends on the publisher. I've been very fortunate to get good covers.
My favorite artist is Don Maitz.
OldWolfGaidin: lol Jody. Just ask Polgara about me. She says
she can't take me anywhere. :-
Polgaratex: G: s'truth
OldWolfGaidin: lol
TAMirabile: Not even in your cage, most likely
Krstlsingr: sing
Leonall: Jody, have you had other AOL chats, or is this your
first?
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, I wish the movie
or the TV series of Pern had worked out.
OldWolfGaidin: ::hmph:: cage :-
HOST EBK Astra: Near impossible, Jody.
SciFiDog: big tonight show shout how hard is it?!!!
Polgaratex: he is super indeed
Jody Lynn Nye TAM, my short stories
are all in anthologies except the ones that have been in convention program
books.
SciFiDog: LOL
Polgaratex: who else would you like to see do covers for your
books?
TAMirabile: Don Maitz has been doing your covers for 12 years?
Sib1: first shorts stories in the Fleet books?
Polgaratex: yeah all us PERNiacs agree
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, this is
my first AOL chat.
JaniceMars: Ah... Anthologies. Do you still write short stories,
even for Anthologies?
Jody Lynn Nye TAM, yes. The first
one was Mythology 101, 1990. The latest was Advanced Mythology, 2001.
Jody Lynn Nye Pol, I like a lot
of artists, but none springs to mind at the moment. David Cherry has also
done marvelous work for me.
Jody Lynn Nye Sib, yes, first short
stories were in the Fleet books, published by Ace, edited by David Drake
and Bill Fawcett.
Jody Lynn Nye Yes, I still write
short stories. I've got to update my bibliography.
HOST EBK Astra: Well, you made a short appearance during WindyCon,
Jody :
TAMirabile: I thought Jody was on for a couple of minutes from
WindyCon
Leonall: Jody - you are super - please consider coming back
again
TAMirabile: Nice if you can keep someone that long
SciFiDog: Double Dog dare you to come back. :-
Polgaratex: nother good one... I love Whelan's covers for Ms
McCaffrey too
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, I had a great
time at Windy. And here, too. Thank you!
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, how nice
of you. I hope you have fun with Ship Errant.
Jody Lynn Nye Triple cat I will.
JaniceMars: Cool....I know a lot of authors who are selling
novels feel that writing short stories can be a waste because the money
is low for them in comparison to that for novels.
HOST EBK Astra: Jody - I hope I'm right - didn't you edit too?
'Don't Forget Your Spacesuit, Dear?'
STARMOM79: How much does the cover art contribute to the success
of a book?
Sib1: Ah, but writing short stories is fun!
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, one of the
nice things about a short story is finishing it quickly. Another is getting
paid MUCH more quickly than you get paid for a book.
JaniceMars: LOL, okay.
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, yes, I did
edit Spacesuit. I loved doing that. I got some wonderful stories out of
people.
Jody Lynn Nye Starmom, the cover
sells the book, you only hope to the right people who will enjoy it. There
have been horrid covers for good books, and nicey-nicey covers for dark
books, and other mistakes.
Jody Lynn Nye I've been lucky so
far.
Jody Lynn Nye Writing short stories
is a riot, as Sib says.
HOST EBK Astra: Yay I was right! Jody - my mom bought me that
book. LOL
Jody Lynn Nye I love anthologies
because they have a theme to inspire you.
Sib1: And a challenge. Can you distill a whole plot and conflict
into a few thousand words?
Jody Lynn Nye We'd better! (lol)
Sib1: Indeed.
Krstlsingr: my cover or death of sleep has Lunzie floating in
a spacesuit... was that the orginal one?
STARMOM79: Did you ever answer how much cover art contributes
to a book's success?
JaniceMars: She sure did Starmom...it contributes big time.
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, no. The original
cover had Lunzie with a techie looking backpack. The Stardance-type cover
is the new one.
Jody Lynn Nye Starmom, I know to
my cost how a bad cover can deep-six a book.
Sib1: Oh, yes. Some covers just make the author cry.
SciFiDog: Jody, do you have an opinion on changing cover art
in the 2nd printing, etc. Many of us memory impaired buy the same book
again 5 years later... not realizing...
J Solusar: Hiya Jody!
Leonall: oh - I agree Dog
Polgaratex: yeah SF Dog!
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, changes in cover
are for several reasons. DOS got a new cover because it was entering a
new market, specifically airport stores, where they want a "big book" look.
STARMOM79: Well, I never read or buy a book based on the cover
art.
HOST EBK Astra: I have STAR. That how I discovered Amy Thompson
TAMirabile: It really is nice to have an author in here who
can type to a chat room
STARMOM79: Sometimes it has little or nothing to do with the
story. Sometimes even the dustjacket synopsis gives you a false idea of
the story
STARMOM79: It may make you pick up the book
Jody Lynn Nye Sometimes the original
art is no longer available. The old process for preparing the art for use
was pretty brutal to the art.
Sib1: But you pick books up based on the cover art.
Jody Lynn Nye Starmom, the fact
is, that you have not arrived until you've had a bad blurb.
JaniceMars: lolololol, that's a great way to look at it Jody.
Krstlsingr: did you have bad lcuk that way with a bad cover
art then?
TAMirabile: Jody, Did Magic Touch suffer from the cover?
SciFiDog: My reputaion is too fragile to take being seen with
a D-Cup come hither-looking tight spacesuit chick cover. :-D
Jody Lynn Nye Didn't you know that
the paperback of the first Dragonrider book pitted the virtuous Lessa against
the dread dragonriders?
Jody Lynn Nye TAM, I think it made
it hard for people to figure out what it was about. A shame, because it's
a nice little book about fairy godparents.
Krstlsingr: so the orginal DOs was more like Sassinak?
OldWolfGaidin: lol
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, have you ever
tried contact paper or a shopping bag?
SciFiDog: LOLOLOL
J Solusar: I'll do it for you, Dog!!
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, yes.
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, when I was a
teenager I put contact paper on an astrology book I was reading to keep
from being ridiculed by my classmates.
OldWolfGaidin: Dog, 'Chicks in spacesuits', as opposed to 'Chicks
in chainmail'?
STARMOM79: Really, lol. The only reason I decided to read Kress'
Probability books was because of JD. I had read the synopses and didn't
think I would like it. Also, Bova's Mars and Return to Mars
J Solusar: ---reputation is shot anyway...
SciFiDog: really? wow.
Krstlsingr: me its by author...
TAMirabile: I'm rereading it Jody
HOST EBK Astra: LOL JS
SciFiDog: LOL. Then I know what they'lll THINK I'm reading LOL
SciFiDog: sweet. :-
Jody Lynn Nye Starmom, word of
mouth is often how I find new books.
Leonall: I think we all hid scifi books within other books
Polgaratex: not me!!!!!!
HOST EBK Astra: I'd hide Analog zines inside of People Magazine
:
SciFiDog: I love those stories. Got any SF author or publisher
gossip for us?
Polgaratex: I have been a proud SF reader for 43 years now
SciFiDog: Do you believe in astrology?
STARMOM79: Not me, I came late to SF
JaniceMars: I used to hide my books...but now that I'm older
than dirt I don't care anymore...heck with 'em.
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, Bob Asprin has
just turned in a new fantasy, written with another author who lives down
the street in New Orleans, to Ace Books.
RowrBasil: Astrology is nonsense. Use an I Ching like a sensible
person.
TAMirabile: LOL Rowr
Athanor IX: They're both bunk. Read tarot cards.
HOST EBK Astra: Jody - did you, or did you want to, attend Clarion?
Have you ever taught at Clarion?
STARMOM79: Since I've been coming to this chatIn case anyone
wants to know, it's my 2nd anniversary!!! My to be read book pile has tripled
STARMOM79: pile
J Solusar: I rely a lot on book titles.
RowrBasil: Well, we can agree on reading bird entrails, at least.
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, if I read my
horoscope it's for fun, but I did teach mysefl trigonometry.
JaniceMars: A 3 person collaboration?
Jody Lynn Nye The Mongols used
sheep entrails.
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, never been
to Clarion.
Jody Lynn Nye Never taught there,
either. I wouldn't mind.
TAMirabile: Depends on how the bird was killed, Rowr
HOST EBK Astra: Happy Anniversary, STAR. I for one am glad you
found us :
STARMOM79: Me too:-D
Jody Lynn Nye Starmom, congrats.
May your read pile never lessen.
Krstlsingr: and could the bord talk LOL
RowrBasil: TAM..I recommend examining the Christmas turkey.
STARMOM79: :-D
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, no, Bob and
Eric are writing together, and Bob and I are writing together.
JaniceMars: I'm all confused.
Jody Lynn Nye TAM, I don't think
you can get much info out of stuffing.
JaniceMars: Which is, of course, par.
Polgaratex: hard on the sheep tho
SciFiDog: cool!
HOST EBK Astra: LOL
TAMirabile: Rowr you ever managed to get a Christmas turkey
with the entrails in the right place?
OldWolfGaidin: Baa, Polgara :-
SciFiDog: Bob Aspirin is an ideal cure for a reality caused
headache. :-
Polgaratex: thats spelt BAD Wolfie dear
Krstlsingr: it didnt need stuffing... it wasnt empty...
STARMOM79: Boy have I got piles!
OldWolfGaidin: ::chuckles::
RowrBasil: TAM..i love the commercial with the 'you want me
to reach into the what, and pull out the what what?'
Jody Lynn Nye Basil, me, too. I
love the look on the woman's face.
Jody Lynn Nye Been there, ew, did
that.
JaniceMars: Dog, that was a truly hideous pun. Bad Dog, bad
bad dog.
JaniceMars: Jody.... I have another question that just jumped
me...
Leonall: I've enjoyed this chat - have to leave - merry merry
Christmas Jody
Jody Lynn Nye Down, question!
Leonall: & every else too
Jody Lynn Nye Leonall, thank you
for coming
Jody Lynn Nye Happy holidays to
you.
JaniceMars: You write fantasy and you write Science Fiction...
are there any other genres or sub-genres you have or will tackle in the
near future?
Sib1: SF romance if I have any say in the matter.
Jody Lynn Nye Why, yes. I'm working
on mysteries, too. As if I didn't have enough to do. But I've been reading
mysteries since at least fifth grade.
JaniceMars: Ah, Susan is trying to influence you to write SF
romance?
Jody Lynn Nye AND SF romance. But
only with the right collaborator. Sib.
Sib1: Or historical fiction. You, me, Egypt?
Jody Lynn Nye Taffeta, darling?
Jody Lynn Nye Of course, Egypt.
JaniceMars: And you're publishing Mysteries under your own name,
or do you ever use a pseudonym or should I shut up now?
Sib1: Taffeta.
Jody Lynn Nye I've never used a
pseudonym, but I've got one all ready should the occasion become right.
HOST EBK Astra: --- currently stuck on the Liaden Universe :
OldWolfGaidin: Science fiction romance. Is that where robots
meet and fall in love? :-
Polgaratex: nope androids
TAMirabile: Love those books, Astra
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, Liaden is
wonderful. I love good space opera.
Jody Lynn Nye Wolf, that's SO 20th
century.
JaniceMars: Okay....then I need to ask...what would make it
necessary for you to use a pseudonym, or should I shut up, lol.
Jody Lynn Nye Now it's all nanobots.
Sib1: I love the Liaden universe. And consider them prime examples
of sf romance.
Sib1: So's Catherine Asaro's work.
TAMirabile: They could make you a little grumpy toward males
in general though
RowrBasil: Reminds me when guitarist friend wanted to find a
band, and they asked him if he knew what 'androgynous' meant..He thought
they meant Android.. 'Mechanical?'
SciFiDog: pseudonyms should be saved for erotica genre. :-
OldWolfGaidin: I dare someone to write a story where a copier
falls in love with a fax machine. :-
Polgaratex: Pet Peeve.... publishing old books by now popular
writer who wrote under psudonym
HOST EBK Astra: There ya go, Jody - submit a short story to
one of Cecelia Tan's books :
RowrBasil: Koontz..the horror, the horror?
HOST EBK Astra: Should I run now?
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, once in a
while people want to try out a genre that they're not sure their usual
fans will like, so they try a pseudonym. Also, bookstore chains will downgrade
your work if you publish something new that doesn't sell as many copies
as you usually do, so changing your name slightly might help.
J Solusar: The wedding announcements would be pretty easy, Wolf.
OldWolfGaidin: lol
TAMirabile: lol J S
OldWolfGaidin: rofl...See 'Prey'
TAMirabile: Nanocritter Romance
SciFiDog: OWG... '... and the feed stuck wide open... the white
paper shooting forth in a torrid rushing stream...'
Krstlsingr: ::bad pun::... Fax You?
Jody Lynn Nye Wolf, that sounds
like fun.
RowrBasil: SciFi.. my blushes! please! My Imac is sensitive.
JaniceMars: Oh, I didn't know that bookstores had that much
power. How distressing.
Jody Lynn Nye Solusar, LOLOL.
JaniceMars: I thought it was just the publishers that played
fast and loose with people's advances if they happened to write in the
fantastic genres.
TAMirabile: Whoa Sci be careful of that stuff
OldWolfGaidin: lol Sci. I'm going to shut up now. :-
J Solusar: LOL. That was pretty good, Dog!
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, it's gatekeeper
syndrome.
JaniceMars: Gatekeeper syndrome? Sorry....I'm lost again.
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, advances
can be surprisingly small in what you may think of as popular genres.
KingscK: I came in late. what is the title of your newest book?
SciFiDog: Mars... they do.... chains, you know.
OldWolfGaidin: Yes, N.K. Stouffer is so unsuccessful because
B & N checked out her books and declared they were of poor quality.
Sib1: Mystery, and sf/f, for example.
Jody Lynn Nye That's why you should
never quit your day job.
Jade`SilverMist: sorry if this subject has already been covered...
but do you have any advice Jodie in regards to a wannabe fantasy/sci-fi
author trying to find a publisher?
Jody Lynn Nye King, my latest book
is Advanced Mythology, published by Meisha Merlin Publishing.
JaniceMars: Really....didn't know that. I thought SF and fantasy
authors were the poorest, and thus most heroic.
Krstlsingr: Saw a web thing that said the worst thing for a
small autohr was to be shoplifted... No one sees it, and the store never
reorders cos the copies didnt sell...
TAMirabile: Ackkkk Krst
KingscK: Jody what is your latest book?
Jody Lynn Nye Jade, send your book
manuscript, only your best work, to the publisher who publishes that kind
of book.
SciFiDog: Non genre comment: I weep for the near death of the
midlist.
HOST EBK Astra: Sci - one reason to support publishers like
Meisha Merlin.
Jody Lynn Nye Krst, that's probably
true, in a small sense, but the worst thing that can happen to a small
author is to have their books 'returned.' Under the current agreement,
bookstores tear off the front cover and return it for credit. The copy
is then pulped, thereby lost for good, out of what was probably a small
print run to start with.
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, the midlist
does need your prayers.
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, please support
Meisha Merlin and Speculation Press.
Sib1: Yeah!
Jody Lynn Nye They both put out
good books that might never have caught a big publisher's eye.
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, tick tick tick....
JaniceMars: Okay folks...Astra wasn't lying when she said that
Nye is that fastest SF/Fantasy typist this side of the Rockies...
Jody Lynn Nye Sib, Bill says hi.
HOST EBK Astra: And Yarddog too :
Krstlsingr: yea, intersted in NIN's quaetion, cos might want
to publihs my writing someday... friends like them...
Athanor IX: The current return system should be illegal.
JaniceMars: Let's give her a big hand...
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, and who's
on the other side of the Rockies?
Sib1: And I say Hi! to Bill.
JaniceMars: LOLOL, don't know Jody...
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, and Yard Dog,
too!!!!
JaniceMars: See...every time I try to use a cliche....you catch
me!
JaniceMars: Let's give Jody Lynn Nye a big round of applause...
Jade`SilverMist: and Jody.. do you think that the two genres
of sci-fi and fantasy can be mixed in the same work of fiction
JaniceMars: and thank her for keeping up with us!
Jody Lynn Nye Sorry, I got caught
in the cliche, I mean clinch.
Sib1: clap, clap, clap!!!
SciFiDog: there has GOT to be a better way than the current
remainder system! The waste!
SciFiDog: can't we have remainders donated to a library ere...
or in Afghanistan?
Polgaratex: LOL makes for a GREAT chat!
HOST EBK Astra: Faster than light!
OldWolfGaidin: ::applauds::
Polgaratex: yeahhhh whistles
Jody Lynn Nye Janice, thank you,
thank you, thank you.
Krstlsingr: :YAY thanks Jody!!::
HOST EBK Astra: Jody - this has been fantastic! THANK YOU!!
TAMirabile: I am so impressed A writer who can stay with this
bunch for two hours
STARMOM79: Sometimes I see them in thrift stores
Jody Lynn Nye Dog, remainders often
get donated to AIDS wards and prisons.
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, thank you
for inviting me. I've had a great time.
Sib1: And people in prisons then write the authors interesting
letters.
HOST EBK Astra: Gonna go find Taylor's Ark :
RowrBasil: SciFi..agreed. Donate them to your old collge, high
school, church..
SciFiDog: Thank you so very much, Jody.
TAMirabile: Thanks, Jody, you've been great!
Polgaratex: thanks Jody!
SciFiDog: :::::clap clap clap clap clap:::
TAMirabile: Astra, I'll let you read mine if you can't fine
one---but I want it BACK!!
J Solusar: ::golf clap::
Jody Lynn Nye Sib, yiyyy, you're
right.
STARMOM79: Will you be at Torcon3
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, enjoy. The
next book to come is the third in the Taylor's Ark series, The Lady and
the Tiger.
Jody Lynn Nye Thank you, TAM.
Jody Lynn Nye Starmom, we will
be in Toronto. Looking forward to it.
RowrBasil: I got cheesed off when I donated carefully chosen
books to the local library, then saw them on sale for a quarter apiece
outside the place.
HOST EBK Astra: Smirk, TAM :
TAMirabile: Sometime again, Jody?
SciFiDog: excellent, Jody. I did not know that.
Polgaratex: best author chat I have ever been to
HOST EBK Astra: Will meet you in person at Torcon!
Jody Lynn Nye TAM, I'd love to.
Just tell Janice you'd like me back.
Jody Lynn Nye (g)
JaniceMars: Indeed...we'll have to have you out again when your
next book is due Jody.
Jody Lynn Nye Pol, thank you.
Jody Lynn Nye Astra, I'm looking
forward to it.
Jade`SilverMist: good bye all
Jody Lynn Nye Good night, Jade.
JaniceMars: Nite Jade!
TAMirabile: I still have to find Medicine Show
Jade`SilverMist: happy paths and sleep well
HOST EBK Astra: LOL Sib!
STARMOM79: Oh boy ooh boy oh boy!
HOST EBK Astra: Sounds like a story behind that :
Jody Lynn Nye TAM, both of the
others will be reissued when book three comes out.
Sib1: good.
Jody Lynn Nye Night, folks in the
OWC. Thank you all for stopping in. I enjoyed talking with all of you.
JaniceMars: Goodnight Jody and thanks.
The February 2000 Q&A
canaan jody, do you have a
'bot' that
sends notices when your site is updated?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Canaan, a
'bot?'
canaan LOL... a list
Serve... (here i am using jargon that my girlfriend has to explain to me *blush*)
Merelan WAVING TO Jody
Jody_Lynn_Nye Hi, Marilyn. Welcome! Marilyn, can you tell Janice what you do on CompuServe?
JanCyberC ACTION
waves
Merelan Janice: [G]
I'm the
Forum Administrator for both SFLIT and SFAUTHORS over there.
canaan *scary music goes
here*.... JODY.... how long have you been writing? and how did you manage
the coup of working with McCaffrey?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Canaan, I
have been writing all
my life. I got paid for the first time in 1980 or '81 by a
magazine called Video
Action. The
privilege of working with Anne McCaffrey
came about because I had done some game writing for Mayfair
Games, who produced
the Dragonriders of Pern board/role play game.
canaan
coolness...
Jody_Lynn_Nye When the
proposal went in to TOR Books for the
Crossroads series of choose your own adventures, I had the
qualifications in
game writing and the deepseated fan heart to want to write the
Pern
book Which
became two books as the
series progressed.
canaan not to mention
branching out into the Doona series
Jody_Lynn_Nye
She liked my work, so she trusted me enough to be the writer on
the Dragonlovers
Guide to Pern, plus the four collaborations
Sib I deeply love your Ship
Who characters.
Merelan What are you
working on currently, Jody? I got the second of the Dreamworld books,
although (BLUSH) I haven't yet read it.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Just
finished with the third Dreamland book,
The Grand Tour. The cover will be posted on my site soon. I am in the
process of finishing up a
collaboration with Bob Asprin called License Invoked.
Merelan And the URL on your
site is....?
canaan Jody, I've noticed a
trend of sci fi authors
who seem to move into fantasy... why is that? (other than the
obvious $$
motive)
Jody_Lynn_Nye I loved the
Ship Who
characters, and I'm glad I was able to write a second story.
My site is at http://www.sff.net/people/jodynye
Merelan Oh, what kind of
universe is THIS
collaboration set in, Jody?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I like
writing both fantasy and SF. Just wait. I plan to get into
mysteries one day,too.
Sib How about romance? Know someone
you could collaborate with...
Jody_Lynn_Nye I wish
there was a huge monetary gain involved (pause while I remove cat
from keyboard) You never know about romance... (g)
Jody_Lynn_Nye License
Invoked is a
new universe. If it goes well, who knows?
Merelan Tell.... telll!
What KIND of universe?
Jody_Lynn_Nye You in
particular will like this,
and I hope forgive any stupid mistakes we make: most of the
action takes place
in New Orleans. It's a book about spies, rock and roll, and
magic. Humor, naturally.
SharonC I saw that you are
one of the authors in
Perchance to dream, How did that anthology come about?
Sib hee hee
Jody_Lynn_Nye Denise
Little was good enough to include me.
Strangely enough (or not so strangely), Waking In Dreamland had
that as its
working title.
Sib
did it? cool.
Jody_Lynn_Nye The story I
put in
Perchance can fit into the Dreamland universe.
Merelan Jody, Rock and
Roll? No Jazz?
canaan i've had a
disasterous situation with a
potential agent, one who was listed in the WRITERS MARKET... any
suggestions on
how to find a good/safe one?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Only as
an undercurrent. Jazz is sort of part of the 'good guy' in the
end.
Sib When's Perchance to
Dream out?
SharonC April 2000.
Sib Next month, then?
SharonC Probably towards
middle or end of
March.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Canaan, I
don't know. Ask
people who like their agents, then send a query letter or call
their office to
see if they're taking new clients.
Jody_Lynn_Nye I'm looking
forward to reading
Perchance to Dream myself. Sounds like there is a lot of cool stories in there.
canaan Jody, ok... *S*...
do you like your agent???
hint hint hint....
Jody_Lynn_Nye I do not
have a US
literary agent. My husband is a contract specialist. For other
purposes, we use JABberwocky Agency. (Yes, the
capitals are deliberate. They stand for Joshua A. Bilmes.)
canaan thanx
Sib What a great name!
SharonC Do you have any
other collaborations planned?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Not
*officially*, but we talk about things, y'know.
Merelan Jody,
I assume you and Bill will be at ChiCon over Labor Day?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Yes,
Merelan. Hometown convention. It should be
a good one. Are you and Harry coming up?
JanCyberC Speaking of
conventions...
JanCyberC What conventions
are you planning on attending this year?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Jan:
ImagineCon 2000, Virginia
Beach, 20-23 April, DucKon, Arlington Heights, IL, June,
worldcon, of course.
BATS 2000, London, Halloween weekend.
Merelan Jody, yes, we're
planning to come up.
[SMILE] 1st have to find cat and dachshund sitters! (For those
who don't know,
ChiCon is the World Science Fiction Convention, and it's held in
Chicago this
year.)
SharonC You said you have
another Dreamlands book
due, what do you plan next?
canaan Jody
should come to Cleveland.... we'd treat you right!!
Sib Will
the rerelease of the Myth books be available by
Chicon?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I have two
books that will be out in time for
WorldCon -- PLUG TIME!
Sib Plug! Plug!
Merelan Woh! [g]
Jody_Lynn_Nye Applied
Mythology is an omnibus volume of the
first three of my Mythology 101 series. It is being
published in hardback by Meisha Merlin Publishing (their website is their name). The hardcover is
only available to order until July 15, then the print run is closed. All
hardbacks will be autographed, personalized if you wish.
JanCyberC Excellent
Jody_Lynn_Nye The trade
paperback will be available indefinitely thereafter. The second
book is The Grand Tour, third in the Dreamland series.
SharonC great. My copies
are falling apart.
JanCyberC And I've only
been able to find the
one...MYTHOLOGY ABROAD.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Sharon, the
next book I'm working on is Advanced Mythology, #4 in the series. After that, I've got a few
proposals out. I'll see who squawks first.
Sib Love the Myth books
Jody_Lynn_Nye Jan, it's
incredible. That's the rarest one. It had a lamentably short print run.
AraNo1
Congrats, Jody
canaan Jody, what do you
think of 'book doctors' is it worth the the investment?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Canaan, in
answer to your question, only if you
find one who is really reputable, like Ardath Mayhar. The others
are just greedy people.
JanCyberC Now...the Dreamland Series...this is a continuation of SCHOOL OF LIGHT?
Jody_Lynn_Nye The School
of Light is book 2 of the series.
The first was called Waking In Dreamland.
Merelan I never DID see
Mythology Abroad!
[GRUMBLE]
Jody_Lynn_Nye Well,
Merelan, now's your chance! (See me twirl my straw hat and pound the stage with my cane.)
JanCyberC Merlin Publishing
has commissioned a 4th
book in the Dreamland Series?
Sib The Myth
books have such wonderful covers. And are delightful.
JanCyberC Or sorry...the
Myth Series?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Jan, that
is correct. I was delighted, but the publisher, back when he was the buyer for Barnes
& Noble, always loved them. Properly, it is the Mythology series.
Bob Asprin writes the Myth series.
JanCyberC Thanks Jody. Do
you have a publication date for the 4th book?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I adore the
covers. Don Maitz was always my first choice. I was lucky that
the first publisher, and now the second, wanted to use him. Fourth book
will be out in time for WorldCon 2001. Which means I'd better hustle and write the darned thing!
JanCyberC LOL!
SharonC The Mythology books
were the first of yours I'd ever read. I'm glad to see a 4th coming out.
Merelan All of the
Mythology books will be in your
ChiCon released omnibus?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I'm
delighted to say a lot of people like them and are glad to see
them coming back.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Merelan,
all three, Mythology 101, Mythology Abroad, and Higher Mythology will be in Applied
Mythology.
JanCyberC Will Merlin
Publishing put out the 4th book hardback...limited run as well?
Jody_Lynn_NyeJan, I sure hope so. People like to shelve series together. The cover
is by Don Maitz. The artwork is on my website. Please spread the word.
Sib Any
chance of a third Shona Taylor book?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Sib, I have
put in a new proposal, and I am
waiting to hear from the editor/publisher.
Merelan Neat -- I'll have
to hit Larry Smith's table
for it! [G] Sib, you took the letters right off my fingers!
Jody_Lynn_Nye Cross all
extremities. I really like the plot I submitted.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Meisha
Merlin might even have its own table. SOMEONE will have it at the convention!
SharonC Now I really wish I
could make it to ChiCon.
Jody_Lynn_Nye If not,
I'll sit on the stairs with a box of books and an envelope full of change.
JanCyberC LOL!
Merelan Jody: [G]
SharonC lol.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Sharon, you
can order your copy, personalized if you want, from Meisha Merlin, Website www.meishamerlin.com
Sib Here you've done a
short story for an electronic published anthology. What do you think of ebooks?
Jody_Lynn_Nye There's
only a hurry if you want a hardback.
canaan Jody, have you heard
/are you involved in.. the Pern TV series? i havent had an update in
awhile
SharonC Plan too. Meisha
Merlin is getting a lot of my business lately.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Sib, I am
all in favor of e-books, especially good ones like yours.
Jody_Lynn_Nye I'm not
involved in the Pern TV series as of
yet. I would like to be. I am waiting to see what they can do,
because the production company is Canadian. They have specific rules about
certain numbers of the key production staff and stars being Canadian to get
government money.
Jody_Lynn_Nye
Anne said she was very happy with what they were doing, but I
haven't been in touch with her in the last couple of weeks.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Marilyn?
Any news that you know of?
canaan they're behind
schedule... originally they
had intended to have casting ideas by now
Merelan Anne's been VERY
busy on Pern #16, and also with her grandson's birthday.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Drat. I
thought they had the key people on board already.
Jody_Lynn_Nye
We sent Owen a present. I want pictures.
Jody_Lynn_Nye
This is a great opportunity to ask a silly person and get a silly
JanCyberC Okay...Jody.. we
have the Mythology
Omnibus and the 3rd in the Dreamland series coming out in
august...and the 4th
in the Mythology Series coming out next year...anything else on
the shelves
soon?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Jan, that's what's in the pipeline right now. I'm working on a
military book,
another SF book in yet another series, umm, another couple of
short stories, the
Taylor's Ark book (I hope)... a few other things, but mind went
blank.
JanCyberC This is good!
thanks for the
list.
canaan jody, tell us more
about the
military book... futuristic? like david weber/ or eliz
moon?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Futuristic,
yes, sort of like David Weber or
Elizabeth Moon, but in my own weird little way. I've got five,
count 'em, five
plots drawn out already.
canaan outstanding !!!!
looking forward to it....
(no pressure, but why isnt the first draft in my email in box
canaan *S*
Merelan And you're waiting
for nibbles from editors
on them, Jody? GA
Jody_Lynn_Nye You never
know what you might get
if you wish for it, Canaan.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Merelan,
yes, I am waiting to hear who speaks first.
chakaal and if you do get
that in your mbx be
prepared to review and comment extensively
Jody_Lynn_Nye
As long as you don't send me anything nasty.
chakaal who , US?
JanCyberC
Jody...do you ever publish anything on the web that hasn't been
published previously in print?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Jan, I
never do. I would prefer that anything I
put on line has hard copy somewhere before I do.
JanCyberC Sounds like a
sound way of doing things
Jody.
canaan jody, do you, or
have you worked with writer's groups? or helped struggling writers get a 'leg up'...
i've noticed all the star trek people are now writers with a little help from
friends
Jody_Lynn_Nye Canaan, I
don't work with
writers' groups directly. I do do workshops and lectures (two
coming up at the
end of March).
JanCyberC Where will these
workshops and lectures take place?
Jody_Lynn_Nye
Workshops will be with the Off Campus Writers Workshop in
Winnetka, IL. I will
post the info on my site. It's a group but nonmembers can attend,
I
think.
canaan
where where where? ever do workshops online/
Jody_Lynn_Nye Canaan, I
haven't done a workshop on line
yet..
Sibeol So, when you putting
together the Dogs in
Space anthology, Jody?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Say, Sib,
that's a great idea!
(Me, the consummate cat person -- but I like dogs as
individuals.)
Jody_Lynn_Nye I'll
propose it and see who salutes.
Sibeol Go for it! i want
in!
canaan so jody... who do
YOU read for fun?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I love and
adore Terry
Pratchett, Lois McMaster Bujold, a lady called McCaffrey, Susan
Sizemore (take a
bow), Esther Friesner. I also go
back and read Lilian
Jackson Braun's Cat Who mysteries, Dorothy L. Sayers, Rex Stout,
Arthur Conan
Doyle... a pattern begins to emerge, no?
canaan not eliz
moon?
Jody_Lynn_NyeI'm still
typing!
Elizabeth Moon, just getting into David Weber (time crunch, but I
love him),
Harry Turtledove, And all
sorts
of people who are on my floor...I mean, their books are.
di When do you find time to
write?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Mostly
mornings. I start very early, and go until I begin to write
gibberish.
JanCyberC How many hours
does that
take Jody?
JanCyberC Usually...
Jody_Lynn_Nye ...And not
only is it *authentic* prairie
gibberish...
canaan jody, do you write
under any other names?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Not so far,
but I have
got a pseudonym waiting for my great political commentary novels.
canaan LOL
JanCyberC When are you
planning on
writing those commentaries, Jody?
Jody_Lynn_Nye In all my
copious spare time, of
course!
canaan jody, do you work
out? wander
through the parks, hold up liquor stores, to de-stress?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I walk and
stretch for
exercise. I should do more of both. Can't stand aerobics.
JanCyberC
You edited that one anthology...any plans on editing again in the
near
future?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I would
love to edit another
anthology. I want to clear a few things off my desk (shove.
Crash!) before I
propose one.
JanCyberC So all in all it
was
a good experience?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I enjoyed
doing
Don't Forget Your Spacesuit, Dear! very much. The
harrowing part was editing
other people's manuscripts, but they were pros about it.
Sibeol I was
lucky with the S:IC anthology -- found the writers (like Jody)
but didn't have
to edit.
Merelan
S:IC anthology?
Jody_Lynn_Nye The
Stardates
anthology was fun because we didn't have the length
considerations that are a
problem in a print antho.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Stardates:
Infinite Celebrations is a product of Dreamsunlimited.com.
Jody_Lynn_Nye (right,
Sibeol?)
Jody_Lynn_Nye Anyway,
they commissioned an
antho about holidays in the future, either real or made up. I did
Thanksgiving
on a colony ship in space. It's
called "The Stars In their Courses."
JanCyberC Jody...if you
were to
edit another anthology, what would the theme be? Any Preferences
right
now?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I've
had several in mind, and now I'm including the dog one. (How
about Dog Stars as
a title?)
I don't
want to blab themes just now, but I'll let everyone know if I get
one under
construction.
JanCyberC Thanks so much
Jody!
The Windycon '99 Q&A
Psybling Welcome! Willkommen! Bienvenue!
Cybling Hi Jody...pleased to have you here today.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Hi. I'm very happy to be here at Cybling. My brothers will tell you I am a leading expert on Cybling rivalry. (ar ar)
Psybling :)
Techyo LOL Jody, glad to meet you.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Thanks, Techyo. Glad you're here.
Cybling Okay...why don't we start out with some questions that have been posted on the board. From Jane Kaufenberg: What's your biggest frustration as a writer? Do you consider yourself to be an artist or a craftsperson, and can you explain the difference? Thank you.
Jody_Lynn_Nye My biggest frustration as a professional writer is never having the time to really explore (sorry about the split infinitive) the story. When I've got a deadline, I feel as if I'm compromising the quality of my work. I am an artist, but I approach my work as a craftsman. I think it was Einstein who said that invention is 5% inspiration and 95% perspiration. Once I have done the fun part of creating a story, it's the craftsman's job to put it in a form that other people will appreciate.
Cybling Susan Sizemore asks: You travel a whole lot. How do your world travels influence your writing? Talk about some of the places you've been and how they've contributed to how you get ideas and have influenced you if you would, please.
Jody_Lynn_Nye I love to travel, and it pleases me that my writing manages to make my trips to interesting foreign lands almost entirely tax deductible. (ahem) I think it's important to 'walk the walk' when dealing with a foreign culture. Also, being in a place as different as say, Egypt, opens up entire possibilities in my mind as to how people lived, and how their thought processes, and, indeed, problems, are changed by differences in their environments. Egypt and Greece, which my husband and I have been to in the last year, were the greatest revelations. I've always admired both cultures -- but I was surprised to learn about the divisions, both timewise and geography-wise, within each one. Our delightful guide in Knossos, Crete, definitely thought of the Greeks as "Them," and himself and his fellow Cretans as "Us." Before that, I lumped them together.
Cybling Jody...School of Light came out in June this year from Baen Books and appears to be a continuation of the story presented in Waking in Dreamland. Is this so?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Yes, it is. The Dreamland is an ongoing series. SOL is not a sequel but a story that follows closely to WID chronologically. The next story, The Grand Tour (due out some time next summer -- watch my website for updates), is in the same world, with more new characters, a little further along the timeline.
Cybling BTW, the first four chapters of School are available online at http://www.baen.com/chapters/school_1.htm Jody...Taylor's Ark (97, Ace) seems to be hard SF. Which do you prefer writing, SF or Fantasy or do you make a distinction?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I don't have a specific preference. I like writing both SF and fantasy. I do make a sharp distinction between the two genres. Readers do, too. The science must work in SF, but it goes along the same lines as using one suspension of disbelief per story (or as David Brin pointed out in a panel I was just on with him, in SF it's one suspension plus warp drive).
Psybling LOL!
Cybling Jody...I've read that you're thinking of picking up the "Mythology" series again. When can we expect the next book in this series?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Mythology, next August, Meisha-Merlin Publishing is re-releasing the first three Mythology books in an omnibus edition, entitled "Applied Mythology." The year after, 2001, book 4, Advanced Mythology, will also be published by Meisha-Merlin.
Cybling Jean would like to know: What are you working on now?
Jody_Lynn_Nye I've just finished The Grand Tour. I'm working on a book that is a collaboration with Bob Asprin, to be called "License Invoked." I'll be getting back to that on Monday. Then, moving on to Advanced Mythology.
Techyo LOL what about FTL is it really hard science or just a needed plot device?
Jody_Lynn_Nye Techyo, we need it just to move the story along, if it is based in outer space. Otherwise it would take years to get between stars. The last time I heard a lecture on FTL, the scientist speaking didn't believe it would be possible. I hope he's wrong.
Techyo Has Cybling really been tying the guest up till they answer, Jody?
Cybling Yes. Techyo.
Psybling Jody, I'm afraid I can't ask specific questions because your writing is among my favorite type. Namely, that I know anything I pick up with your name on it will be VERY readable.
Jody_Lynn_Nye Thanks, Psybling. That's a tremendous compliment.
Psybling And be assured that I have the same trouble remembering titles and plot lines with just about everyone. :)
Jody_Lynn_Nye It's data overload. We all have it these days. But wouldn't you rather have too many books than too few?
Psybling "A mind is a terrible thing." - D Quayle
Techyo Indeed
Jody_Lynn_Nye That's MINDE.
Psybling I have one heck of a library. Most of it in boxes.
Jody_Lynn_Nye When we moved into our house, I liked it because we had a concrete-floored barn, very suitable for storing too many books.
Psybling LOL! But I do remember DON'T FORGET YOUR SPACESUIT, DEAR. Lots of fun!
Jody_Lynn_Nye Thank you. My mother is sitting here next to me. I created that book so she would finally understand what it was I've been reading and writing all these years.
Psybling ROFL! "Any people PAY you to do this, dear?"
Jody_Lynn_Nye Years ago, I found one of those single-frame cartoons of a man passing one of those clocks in a bank window that said "Time: 3:42. Temperature: 73o. Number of people who have asked you when you're going to get a REAL job: 56,423
Cybling lololol
Techyo ROFL
Cybling I love it.
Techyo I take it you like your work?
Psybling Funny, I get the same questions when I tell people I work with computers. :)
Jody_Lynn_Nye Oh, yes. It beats office politics, commuting, boring tasks that you have to do because they're in the job description but everyone has forgotten why it's being done.
Psybling LOLOLOLOL! Ooh, severe flashback cramp!
Jody_Lynn_Nye Okay, so I only get paid when I work, and my office supervisors are cats, it still beats the alternatives. Also, I have lots of fun doing it. When it isn't driving me crazy.
Cybling We're not sure what a "flashback cramp" is Psybling, but thank you.
Techyo Translation for Psyb. He can relate to the "we don't know why we're doing something" statement.
Psybling "Why do you do this?" "Because that's the way we've ALWAYS done it!" You know how I am about that, Cyb.
Cybling The WindyCon committee has specifically told me I may not keep guests duct taped to the chairs longer than 30 minute.
Techyo ROFL
Jody_Lynn_Nye (VEG) ROFL, too.
Psybling :::snickering:::
Cybling So let's thank Jody for joining today...round of applause guys!
Techyo Jody thank you very much for the insights you've gave us!
Psybling :::applauding like a fool:::
Techyo :::CLAP CLAP CLAP:::
Jody_Lynn_Nye Thank you both for showing up. I really appreciate it. I had fun, and hope you did, too.
Psybling Absolutely!
Techyo Sure did!
Jody_Lynn_Nye Thank you, Cybling, for organizing everything.
Psybling It's ALMOST as good as being there in person... not. :)
Psybling (But very close)
